What to Expect on a Guided Duck Hunt

What to Expect on a Guided Duck Hunt

Duck hunting is a unique experience and no wonder that hunters are, one after the other, admirers of this hobby. During the migrations, these magnificent birds tend to occupy the sky and perform swirls that are breathtaking to watch. This time is also the perfect opportunity for hunters to both admire and take their shots.

On top of that, hunters who decide to go on a duck hunt not only have the opportunity for a wonderful experience but are also helping the ecosystem. Migratory flocks can lead to overpopulation and, therefore, cause some serious environmental damage. Other birds, especially those who migrate to the same habitat, face a lack of food and shelter due to overcrowding.

So, if you’re ready to jump on a once-in-a-lifetime experience and help nature out but are unsure on how to go about it 100% successfully, this blog is for you!

Why Choose Guided Duck Hunts?

For this pastime, freeing up a few hours of your schedule just isn’t enough. There’s just too much to do – scouting locations ahead, finding a movement pattern, purchasing all needed equipment, and of course, navigating local regulations. Not everybody has time to handle that much preparation and logistics, especially if you’re eager to start as soon as you can. And that’s perfectly fine because this is where we step in!

Guided hunting in Tennessee is all about making your trip worthwhile but without taking anything out of the experience. On your next duck hunt with Reelfoot Lake Duck Hunting Guide, you’ll have the chance to do it all with a professional hand guiding you. Our purpose here is to prepare the ground for you in the days before your arrival and to save you from all the things that hunters don’t want to deal with (filling out the paperwork and organization), so that you can jump right in and get some feathers in your face ASAP!

Hunting With the Right Outfitter

Hunting with the right outfitter should feel like hunting with a group of friends and enthusiasts and having a great time, no hassle included.  When you hunt with Reelfoot Lake, we’ll start early in the morning, before dawn. After gathering at a prearranged spot, we’ll do a quick briefing to get set up for the day. It’s important to have a plan and to keep everybody updated about how the day will look, so we’ll have to agree on a few things like hunting spots, using the right decoys, having all the necessary equipment, and more.

After debriefing, the next step is driving out to the agreed site. Upon arrival, spreading decoys is next. We’ll all work together to widen out hundreds of them to mimic a feeding flock of ducks.  As you know, this is important to attract the birds and position them within our range. In other words, a good decoy spread is going to set us up for success.

Finally, the hunting action can begin with the first sign of light. We’ll deploy ourselves strategically to maximize shooting opportunities. For the same reason, we’ll wear well-camouflaged clothes and blinds.  To attract flocks of ducks, we’ll use calling techniques such as electronic calls. Depending on your skill level, we’ll help you only if we see the need.

Depending on the weather but primarily on the flock’s activity, we’ll need to take a midday pause to change decoy setups or even find another spot to continue. Sometimes, it’s hard to know where to find ducks in Tennessee, so having different locations in mind is necessary.  Of course, we’ll break for lunch and snacks to get ready for the rest of the day.

As the light fades, it’s time to wrap up our trip. We’ll collect our decoys, pack up our gear and, of course, take care of all harvested birds. You’ll learn how to clean your catch and prepare them for the trip home. The day will end with a gathering and exchanging of hunting stories and great recipes!
